Daniel E. Greene

Daniel E. Greene, N.A. is one of America’s leading figure, portrait, and still life painters and has been internationally acclaimed as one of the world’s most accomplished pastelists. His portraits have portrayed leaders of government, banking, education, industry, royalty, and the arts, including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt; author Ayn Rand; publisher William Randolph Hearst; U.S. Ambassador John Langeloth Loeb Jr.; Baroness and Dr. Betsee Parker; television journalists Bryant Gumbel and Bob Schieffer; and composer Alan Menken.

Greene’s works can be found in more than 700 public and private collections. He has taught at the Art Students League of New York and at The National Academy of Design (New York City) and has instructed more than 10,000 students throughout the United States and Europe. He is the author of two definitive books: Pastel and The Art of Pastel, which have been translated into nine languages. He has also produced six instructional videos that are collected by artists worldwide. In 2017, a biography was published about Greene’s work titled Daniel E. Greene Studios and Subways: An American Master, His Life and Art. He is the subject of two 2018 museum retrospective exhibitions at The Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown, OH) and the Mattatuck Museum (Waterbury, CT), respectively.

In 2001, the Portrait Society of America presented Greene with the Medal of Honor for his distinguished body of work. In 1999, he was awarded The Artists’ Fellowship’s Benjamin West Clinedinst Memorial Medal for exceptional artistic merit. In 1995, the American Society of Portrait Artists honored Greene with the John Singer Sargent Award for life-long dedication to excellence in portraiture. In 1992, the Oil Painters of America named him to their Hall of Fame. In 1983, Greene was inducted into the Pastel Hall of Fame. He will be presented with a Living Legend Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 American Masters exhibition at the Salmagundi Club.
